That piece by Canova is one of my favorites. When I was in Paris in 2003 I was at the Louvre, walking down an empty hallway looking for the bathroom, and I came upon that piece sort of tucked away in an alcove, like someone had carelessly left it there. There was a window behind it and the afternoon sun was shining in-just one golden shaft of light-it was a fairly stunning moment. I reached out to touch it-there was no one around, I could have-then thought better of it and pulled my hand back. Now I wish I had.
