Saying Goodbye to Tina

I know people always say this, but Tina really was the best dog. She was so sweet and loved everyone. She was the best of everything in a dog.
Tina was a bit odd. She couldn't have been one of my pets otherwise-lol! She was obsessed with bees. She'd stand by the flowering bushes in the back yard for hours trying to catch them, and got stung all the time, but she actually sort of seemed to like it. (Oh yeah-she was definitely my dog!). She also had a rather insane fondness for chocolate, and could tell the difference between the cheap stuff and the expensive imports. Lindt milk chocolate was her favorite, and she ate nearly half a bar in her final moments this morning.
I always said it could the day after Armageddon and this dog would eat! She was a pit bull, after all, and they're famous eaters. She also had that strong pit spirit that kept her with us for three years after the vet diagnosed her with cancer and gave her 6 months to a year. And it was a good three years up until a week or so ago.
Above is a pic of Tina when we lived in the Sonoma Wine Country. She was covered in mud and so happy! She spent her younger years running through the fields and vineyards that surrounded our house in the country. Life was quieter in her golden years, but we treated her like the princess she was. We're going to miss her terribly. She was very much loved!
Rest in Peace, our darling Tina

A Little Tease: Exotica
Since I'm not doing much of anything constructive this week (other than finishing FORBIDDEN FRUIT, my food fetish book, and sending it off to my editor Monday night, a week before deadline!), I thought I'd give you all a small peek at my upcoming December 26th release, EXOTICA: SEVEN DAYS OF KAMA SUTRA, NINE DAYS OF ARABIAN NIGHTS. You can pre-order it now through Amazon.com-a nice little holiday gift for yourself or a friend. :)

Welcome to Exotica…

a lush, sensual retreat where women can experience their most taboo fantasies.

Step inside – and leave your inhibitions at the door….

When her old friend, Caroline, invites her to Exotica for a week of pampering and pleasure, Lilli DeForrest has no idea what to expect. But when Rajan steps into her suite, the attraction is intense, immediate, overwhelming. He is her ideal lover -- by turns tender, commanding, erotic. But, as Lilli is about to discover, Rajan’s masterful touch is just the beginning…

As manager of the luxurious retreat, Caroline Winter creates thrilling escapist fantasies for other women. Now she’s about to live out a fantasy of her own: Dark, exotic Kian will challenge her to accept the exquisite pleasures he offers. But what Caroline doesn’t expect is the power of Kian’s sensuality…surrendering to him means abandoning herself completely—and giving up all control...

For Lilli, it’s the chance to test the limits of her sexuality. For Caroline, it’s trusting Kian with her most hidden desires even as she’s uncovering his own guarded secret. And for both women, it’s a journey into the hidden depths of fantasy -- as they discover just how far they’ll go in search of seduction, surrender, and pleasure beyond imagining…

EXCERPT:

Pulling the curtain aside, Lilli stepped through, onto the tiled mosaic floor. The sun was softer here, filtered by the silk drapes fluttering at the edges of the terrace. The sun shone through the silk, casting shadows in red and gold everywhere.

At first all she could see was his silhouette against the sun, the shifting colors of the silk playing over his skin. He was long and lean, resting on the raised edge of a pool of water, a tiered fountain making music from the center of the pool. He was shirtless, and she could make out the rounded curve of wide shoulders, strong, muscular arms.

She swallowed hard.

“I am Rajan.”

A deep voice, edged with a soft, husky tone, and an accent that was English and exotic all at the same time. She took another step forward, and the glare of the sun moved into shadow, revealing him to her.

Long, dark hair curling to just below his shoulders framed a face that was all chiseled planes, softened by the lush curve of his mouth as he smiled at her. Teeth so white and perfect. Dazzling. His eyes were dark, nearly black. Skin the color of dark honey, and so smooth. Touchable. She flexed her fingers.

He rose to his feet, every motion graceful, and towered over her five foot four frame. She felt small, delicate in his presence. He moved toward her, one hand outstretched. “You must be Lillian.”

“Lilli, please.” Why was her throat so dry? He was only a man.

But no, that was a lie. He was the most spectacularly beautiful man she had ever seen. Far too perfect for her. But her skin was alive, tingling, simply looking at him.

In a moment he was in front of her, that smile making her light-headed as her blood rushed through her veins. She had to look beyond him for a moment, to the view of the rugged, dusky gray mountains like paper cutouts against the backdrop of stark blue sky. She had to catch her breath.

Her breath went right out of her when he touched her hand. Like fire. Like electricity on her skin. Was it only her nerves that were making her react like this?

“Come and sit by the water with me. It’s cool out here.”

His fingers folded around hers and her skin went hot beneath his touch as she followed him across the terrace. She couldn’t speak, could barely think. She’d never been so stunned by the mere presence of another person in her life.

Calm down.

He led her to the edge of the marble pool. The water was blue, sparkling. She watched the play of it in the fountain in the center. Someone had placed handfuls of flower petals there, and they danced as the water moved.

Then his hand was on her chin, lifting her face so she was forced to look into those glittering black eyes.

“Don’t look away, Lilli. I want to see you. And you need to see me, to know me. We’re going to become very close during our time together. You musn’t be afraid.”

She blinked up at him. “I’m not. I’m just...you’re a little larger than life.”

He smiled at her, the corners of that lush mouth lifting a little. His mouth was too beautiful when he smiled. And she was going to touch it. To kiss him.

God.

Too good to contemplate, really. But she needed to calm herself, to let go of her fear, her tension, if she was going to enjoy this. And he was far too good not to enjoy. She pushed away those old doubts about him not finding her pretty enough, sexy enough. This was for her. And he was a hired professional. What he thought shouldn’t matter.

“You’re very thoughtful, aren’t you, Lilli? I’m not speaking of being considerate, although I have a feeling you’re that, too. But your mind is working. I can feel it.”

“Yes.” Heat crept into her cheeks.

“I believe I may have the perfect cure for that.”

He moved around behind her, slid his hands over her shoulders. He was so close she could feel the heat of him against her back. When he leaned in his breath was warm in her hair. His voice was low, soft. “Give yourself over to this, Lilli. To me. I will take care of your every need, I promise you. And if I don’t anticipate something, all you have to do is ask. But I’ll try not to make you ask. I’ll do my best to read you, to know what it is you desire before you can put it into words.”

A shiver ran through her, making goose flesh rise on her skin. Yet at the same time, in her mind was the thought that he said these same words to all of his clients.

He went on. “You must learn to relax. To let go all of those thoughts running through your mind, holding you back from the pleasure of the moment. I’ll help you.”

His hands slid down her bare arms. His palms warm, reassuring, and lighting tiny fires of need everywhere he touched that arrowed down, deep in her belly.

“Will you allow me to do this for you, Lilli?”

God, right now she wanted to allow him to do anything, this total stranger. This beautiful stranger. Her stranger.

Even as her pulse hammered with fear, the word came out on a whisper. “Yes.”

Happy Thanksgiving and other stuff!
Finally-I'm posting a pic from the speaker panel I was on last Sunday at the Burbank Barnes & Noble, hosted by Cheers for Writers. Above is Helen Kay Dimon, Vicki Lewis Thompson, myself and Leigh Court.
Fronnie Lewis, our moderator, did a great job with questions and prompts, and it made for an interesting discussion. We talked about blogging, mostly, but also about the romance industry and the difference between erotica, erotic romance and sensual romance.
This was the first time I've met Helen Kay and Vicki, and I have to say, they are both charming, smart and lovely in every way. Leigh is a RWA chapter-mate of mine, so I already know how wonderful she is. :) I took books home to read, and can't wait to get to them. I've only read Vicki's nerd books-this will be my first of her paranormal stories-should be fun!
After the event I did a little shopping (you can't stick a writer in a bookstore and expect us to go home empty-handed!).
What else is going on...? I'm obsessing a bit over making ATC's (artist trading cards). It's been good to have a creative outlet other than writing. If you'd like more info about ATC's, take a look here. I'm very into Asian art, so a lot of my pieces are going in that direction. Here are a few samples:

I'm also on deadline, as usual. *G* I've finished writing this book, FORBIDDEN FRUIT (should be out some time in 2008 from Bantam), and am now in the final editing/polishing stages, and I still love it. Usually by this point I'm just sick of seeing the manuscript, but I'm really enjoying this story. This is my food fetish book, and honestly, I didn't expect to like it so much. When my editor asked me to write about a fetish other than BDSM, I was stumped. The food fetish seemed the most likely option to me, even though it's not something I'm into, but it's been fun and easy to write, and it's made me tune into my senses a bit more.
Okay-must edit two chapters before I start my holiday preparations. I have family coming , so there's lots of cooking to do! Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Workshop and Book Signing This Sunday!
This Sunday, November 11th, I'll be presenting my workshop, AN EXERCISE IN SENSUALITY, at my local RWA chapter meeting, Los Angeles Romance Authors. It's a hands-on workshop where we'll play with a bag of goodies, listen to music, do some writing exercises-should be fun! If you're in the area and aren't a member of LARA, you're welcome to come as a visitor.
After the workshop I'll be signing my books, and the bookstore has all of my current releases: THE DARK GARDEN, THE DARKER SIDE OF PLEASURE, the EXCLUSIVE anthology, and the BEYOND DESIRE short story anthology. I'll only be signing for 1/2 hour to an hour, and the signing will start around noon.
The workshop will begin around 10:30, after we're done with chapter business and announcements, and will run for an hour.
Here's the address:
Barnes & Noble
16461 Ventura Blvd.
Encino, CA
(at Hayvenhurst)

Come by and say hello even if you already have my books! It's a great place to get some holiday shopping done!

Make Me Write!
I have to admit, I've totally been slacking. With a deadline three weeks away. No excuse, really. Sure, I was out of town doing promo, had the flu before that, but what's my excuse for the last week? I don't have one, and I've only written 20 pages.
I always panic when I get near the end of a book. I have to make everything come full circle, have to make it all gel. And more than anything, I'm desperately afraid the ending will be cheesy. Everyone says "I love you" and they ride happily off into the sunset. Okay-these are my books we're talking about, so not quite. So why am I always afraid it'll come out that way?
My friend Dana Belfry said she 'likes the cheese'. So even if I do write a cheesy ending, at least I'll be making my friend happy.
I have less than two chapters to go, then I have to edit and polish the entire book, and add a bit of word count somewhere, as I think I'll end up a little short. Not totally impossible, but wouldn't it have been nice if I'd left myself some breathing room? And I'm presenting a workshop this Sunday at my local RWA chapter, which I have to prepare for, and practice, since I haven't given this workshop in a year, so it's not as though I have nothing else to do. Why do I do this to myself? Am I the only one?
Okay-I am officially giving anyone who stops by my blog and reads this permission to verbally kick my butt! Demand to know how much I've accomplished each day, demand explanations when I'm slacking, call me names...anything! Please.
Gad, I'm pathetic.
